Rappahannock Security Services Carbon Monoxide Detector Saves Spotsylvania Family

On a chilly February morning, Nicky Morley awoke, turned on her gas fireplace and started to get her two school-aged boys, Luke and Ben ready for school.  Before leaving with her toddler, Bradford, to take the boys to school at 8:30 a.m., she turned off the fireplace.

At 8:40 a.m., she received a phone call from Blue Ridge Monitoring, a partner of Rappahannock Security Services (RSS), her home security provider, notifying her that her alarm had been activated and the fire department was being dispatched to her home.  When she arrived home she learned that her Carbon Monoxide Detector alarmed her system after detecting high levels of carbon monoxide.

“The detector from RSS saved our lives.  The fire department told me that my home was filled with carbon monoxide levels in excess of 150 parts per millions,” said Morley.  “I learned from RSS that levels of 50 parts per million can be fatal.”

According to the fire department, the highest levels were detected in the bedrooms.  After checking all areas of the house, the fire department opened windows and doors to release the carbon monoxide from within the home.  Approximately one hour later, after carbon monoxide was no longer detected, Morley and her youngest son were able to go back inside.

“It terrifies me to think that if we didn’t have this system the outcome would have been horrific,” said Morley.  “My children typically ride the bus, so Bradford and I would have normally been at home at this time.”

Morley has since turned off the gas to her fireplace and had the tank removed.  However, it has not been determined that the gas fireplace was the source of the carbon monoxide leak in her home.

“We always offer Carbon Monoxide Detectors to our customers.  It is a silent, deadly killer that most people don’t even know about,” said RSS general manager, Monte Newton.  “It is really a must for all families.  Any source of gas can release carbon monoxide, and any combustible engine, such as a gas furnace, can also release carbon monoxide.”

Since the incident, RSS has visited Morley’s home to replace the filter in the detector, because it had been completely saturated after the incident. In addition, Morley has spent a lot of time sharing her story with family and friends so that they too can be more aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“I didn’t even know about carbon monoxide before buying the detector from RSS,” said Morley.  “I know it saved our lives and I hope that my experience can inspire all families to have a detector installed in their homes.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America. This odorless, tasteless, and colorless gas is known as the "Silent Killer." The Centers for Disease Control estimates that carbon monoxide poisoning claims nearly 500 lives, and causes more than 15,000 visits to hospital emergency departments annually.   Carbon monoxide is produced by common household appliances. When not properly ventilated, carbon monoxide emitted by these appliances can build up and produce disastrous results.
